How Do You Know If You Have a Wasp Nest? 7 Signs to Look For
Seeing the occasional wasp around your property during the warmer months is completely normal. But if you’re suddenly seeing more wasps than usual, or they’re repeatedly flying in and out of the same area, there could be a nest nearby.
One of the difficulties with wasp nests is that they aren’t always visible. They can be hidden in roofs, lofts, wall cavities, sheds and outbuildings, meaning you may notice the wasps long before you find the nest.
So, how do you know if you have a wasp nest? Here are 7 of the most common signs to look out for.

1. You’re Seeing More Wasps Than Usual
One of the first signs of a wasp nest is simply seeing more wasps around your property.
One or two wasps outside doesn’t necessarily mean you have a nest. However, if you’re regularly seeing several wasps around the same area, it’s worth paying attention to where they’re going.
A noticeable increase in activity, particularly around one part of a building, could mean a nest is nearby.
2. Wasps Keep Flying In and Out of the Same Place
This is one of the clearest signs we look for.
Watch the wasps from a safe distance. If they’re repeatedly flying in and out of the same gap, hole or part of the building, they’re likely travelling to and from a nest.
Common entry points include:
-
Gaps underneath roof tiles
-
Eaves and soffits
-
Air bricks
-
Cracks in brickwork
-
Gaps around windows
-
Sheds and outbuildings
-
Holes in the ground
You may not be able to see the actual nest. The entrance the wasps are using could be some distance away from it.
We wouldn’t recommend blocking the entrance. This can cause the wasps to look for another way out and potentially bring them further inside the property.
3. You Can Hear Buzzing in a Wall or Ceiling
If you can hear buzzing but can’t see where it’s coming from, there could be a wasp nest hidden inside the structure of the building.
Wall cavities, ceiling voids and roof spaces can all provide sheltered locations for a nest.
You might be able to see wasps entering through a small gap outside while the nest itself remains completely hidden.
If you suspect a wasp nest is inside a wall or ceiling, don’t start opening the area up to try to find it. Disturbing an active nest can increase the risk of being stung.
4. You’re Finding Wasps Inside Your Property
Finding the occasional wasp indoors isn’t necessarily a sign that you have a nest.
However, if you’re regularly finding wasps in the same room, particularly upstairs, around windows or near a loft space, it’s worth investigating.
There may be a nest somewhere within the building, or the wasps could be entering your property from a nearby nest.

5. You Can See a Wasp Nest
Sometimes the nest is much easier to find.
Wasp nests have a distinctive papery appearance and can vary considerably in size depending on how established the colony has become.
Common places we find wasp nests include:
-
Lofts
-
Roof spaces
-
Wall cavities
-
Sheds
-
Garages
-
Trees and hedges
-
Outbuildings
-
Farm buildings
If you find an active nest, avoid getting too close or disturbing it.
6. Wasps Are Going Into Your Roof or Eaves
We regularly get asked what it means when wasps keep disappearing underneath roof tiles or into gaps around the eaves.
If there’s repeated activity around the same point, there could be a nest within the roof space.
Wasps can access surprisingly small gaps, so you may see exactly where they’re going in without ever being able to see the nest itself.
Again, don’t block the entrance. If you’re unsure whether there’s an active nest, it’s better to get it checked.
7. Increased Wasp Activity Around a Farm or Business
Wasp nests aren’t just a problem around homes.
Farms, warehouses, commercial premises and outbuildings can provide plenty of sheltered locations for wasps to establish a nest.
Look out for increased activity around:
-
Building entrances
-
Roofs and eaves
-
Farm buildings
-
Warehouses
-
Loading areas
-
Outdoor seating areas
-
Waste and bin areas
For businesses, wasp activity can quickly become more than an inconvenience, particularly where employees, customers or members of the public are regularly using the area.

How Do I Find a Wasp Nest?
If you suspect you have a wasp nest but can’t see it, the best thing to do is watch the activity from a safe distance.
Look for wasps repeatedly following the same flight path and entering or leaving through the same point.
You don’t necessarily need to find the actual nest. Identifying where the wasps are entering the building can give a good indication of where the nest is located.
Avoid getting too close or disturbing the entrance while trying to find it.
Where Do Wasps Commonly Build Nests?
Wasps look for sheltered locations where their nest will be protected.
Around homes, farms and businesses in Yorkshire, this can include roof spaces, wall cavities, sheds, garages, barns and other outbuildings.
Nests can also be found outside in trees, hedges and occasionally underground.
This is why it isn’t unusual to have a wasp nest on your property without ever actually seeing it.
What Should I Do If I Find a Wasp Nest?
If you find a wasp nest, don’t immediately try to knock it down, block the entrance or treat it yourself.
Wasps can become defensive when their nest is disturbed, increasing the risk of multiple stings.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know where a wasp nest is?
Watch the wasps from a safe distance. If several are repeatedly flying in and out of the same gap or area, there is a good chance a nest is nearby.
Can you have a wasp nest that you can’t see?
Yes. Many wasp nests are completely hidden from view inside roofs, wall cavities, lofts and other enclosed spaces.
Why are wasps going into my roof?
If wasps are repeatedly entering the same gap around your roof, eaves or tiles, there could be an active nest inside the roof space.
Why are wasps going into a hole in my wall?
They may be using the hole as an entrance to a nest within a wall cavity. Avoid blocking the hole while the nest is active.
Should I block the hole where wasps are getting in?
No. Blocking an active entrance can cause the wasps to search for another way out and potentially bring them further into the property.
Do you need to see the wasp nest to treat it?
Not necessarily. The activity and entry point can often help identify where a hidden nest is located.
Do wasps return to the same nest every year?
No. Wasps don’t normally reuse an old nest, although a new queen may establish another nest in the same general area in a future season.
Do you provide wasp nest removal throughout Yorkshire?
Yes. Bawcro provides professional wasp nest removal throughout Yorkshire for homes, farms and businesses.
